A Pathway to Self Mastery

Sat Nam

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month — a time to raise awareness on this stigmatized, tragic and often very taboo, topic. In addition to help shifting public perception, we at Purest Potential are using this month to help spread hope and tools for people affected by suicide and mental health issues. We want to foster an open dialogue, removing the fear and taboo nature of discussing these serious concerns within our community and world. It affects far too many families for us to ignore, and New Mexico has one of the highest suicide rates in the nation.

Suicidal thoughts, much like mental health conditions, can affect anyone regardless of age, gender or background. Suicide is often the result of an untreated mental health condition. Suicidal thoughts shouldn’t be considered normal and often indicate more serious issues. Emotional well-being is a vital aspect of our overall health and it is important to recognize that everyone can experience emotional struggles at some point in their lives. Just as physical health requires care and attention, so does our mental and for emotional well-being. Ignoring or stigmatizing mental health conditions can exacerbate the risk of developing more severe mental health conditions. Providing access to mental health resources, such has therapy, counseling and crisis hotlines, is essential to endure that individuals experiencing suicidal thoughts or emotional turmoil can find the assistance they need.

Throughout the month of September, Shakti Qurban will be teaching her classes with a focus on breathwork and yoga for depression and anxiety. In addition, all of her personal proceeds from September classes will be donated to NAMI.ORG in memory of her brother who passed via suicide in April, 2021 and in honor of all people affected by suicide and mental health issues.

Our focus this month will be:  “Together for Mental Health”.  Let’s encourage people to bring their voices together to advocate for better mental health care, including a crisis response system.
